NT Seafood Industry Unlocks Initiatives and Opportunities

The Northern Territory Seafood Council has taken vital first steps to unleash further potential within the seafood industry through the development of an NT Seafood Industry Export Strategy.

‘By working with our members, stakeholders and Government a way forward has been identified for the next steps to increase participation of the NT seafood industry into international markets through the development of an NT Seafood Industry Export strategy,’ said Northern Territory Seafood Council CEO, Ms Katherine Winchester.

‘There is an opportunity to crystallise NT seafood assets into a significant COVID-19 rebound opportunity and further grow the economic contributions of the NT seafood industry.

‘It is essential to understand the state of play for current and future seafood markets, so that informed decisions and strategies can be developed to increase the economic returns and benefit of the industry to Territorians.

‘The strategy provides an overview of existing export activities, identifies barriers and opportunities to strengthen local businesses, as well as the development of seven key initiatives for industry to implement.

‘Importantly we understand Territorians rely on NT professional fishers to get their local seafood fix which is why it was important to improve our understanding of existing supply chains and markets that will allow industry to unlock developing export potential,’ said Ms Winchester.

In 2017/18 the NT fishing, aquaculture and associated processing industries contributed $136 million dollars (total GVA) to the NT economy and provided 941 full time equivalent jobs.
