A guide to irrigated fodder production in the top end of the Northern Territory – A Project report from the NT Farmers Association
NT Farmers CEO Mr. Shenal Basnayake announced the release of a new publication from NT Farmers Association: A Guide to Irrigated Fodder Production in the Top End of the Northern Territory. The much anticipated publication has been published and is now available free to members of NT Farmers. The 52-page report describes the production and agronomic issues associated with growing irrigated forages in the Top End.
The information is based on evaluations undertaken at Douglas Daly Research Farm and Katherine Research Station from 1995 to 2004. The objectives were to develop baseline knowledge of irrigated field-crop production in the Top End, identify crops with commercial potential and provide advice to industry. The program evaluated a range of crop and pastures species for productivity, agronomic requirements and economic potential.
The guide provides a comprehensive summary of the research done on irrigated fodder production and shares key agronomic advice arising from that research. Mr. Basnayake further noted that the document was well written and contained photos, tables and graphs clearly elaborating on many years of research results. NT Farmers Engagement Officer, Mr. Greg Owens stated that this guide is a critical first reading point before launching into irrigated fodder production in the top end.
NT Farmers Association would like to thank the author, Mr. Fergal O’Gara for his hard work in producing this extremely informative guide to fodder production. NT Farmers also acknowledges the funding support of the NT Department of Primary Industry and Fisheries and the Caring for Our Country Project.
